When a person is frustrated due to hardships and low returns for his efforts, astrologers diagnose his Horoscope for any one of the dreadful planetary combinations. The Ganda Moola Dosha, Kalsarpa Dosha, Mangalik Dosh, Naadi Dosha etc. amongst the ill-famed combinations.
Ask any astrologer and he would undoubtedly recommend in-depth analysis of all aspects of horoscope for any prediction. However, in case of the Doshas, to our utter dismay, most of such Doshas are constructed upon any specific single planet. Isn't it weird ?
When the doshas are formed on the basis of any single factor, it is quite natural that its possibilities to occur increases manifold. Take any such dosha and you would find them in birth charts of more than 40 % nativities. It is easy to accept now that the dosha that occur so frequently should not be as dreaded as we are made to believe. It is sad that when we are in troubles we lose our commonsense and follow whatever an astrologer suggests.
One such dosha is Gandanta or 'Ganda Moola Dosha'. Gandanta is of three kinds, namely of Tithi, Nakshatr and Lagn. It is stated in BPHS that Birth, travelling and performance of auspicious functions, like marriage etc., during Gandanta are likely to cause death of the person concerned.
Tithi based Gandanta :
The last 2 Ghatikas of Purna Tithi (5 th , 10 th , 15 th ) and the first 2 Ghatikas of Nanda Tithi (1 st , 6 th , 1 1 th ) are known, as Tithi Gandanta.
Nakshtra based Gandanta :
If a person is born with Moon in nakshtra of either Revati, Ashvini, Aslesha, Magha, Jyeshtha or Moola; it is believed to have Ganda Moola Dosha.
However, it is not the full Nakshatra but the Ganda Moola Dosha is formed only when Moon is in a particular pada of these nakshatras in stead of the whole nakshatra. Accordingly Ganda Moola Dosha would be applicable when radical Moon is placed either of the following:
4th Part of Revati Nakshatra, or
1st part of Ashvini Nakshatra, or
4th part of Ashlesha Nakshatra, or
1st part of Magha Nakshatra, or
4th part of Jyeshtha Nakshatra, or
1st part of Moola Nakshatra
Lagna based Gandanta :
The last half Ghatika of Meen and first half Ghatika of Mesh, the last half Ghatika of Kark and first half Ghatika of Simh, the last half Ghatika of Vrischik and first half Ghatika of Dhanu are known as Lagn Gandanta.
One might ask as to the astrological logic for considering the above placement of Moon as bad or unfavourable. Well, the Gadanta is believed to be the Joining Knot - a conjunction between two signs and nakshatra. The area where one rashi ends and another rashi begins is called Sandhi (joint). The process of change takes place here. You would appreciate that any change brings in friction and resistance to change. This is the reason, this zone signifies unfavourable conditions for the native.
Now, if we observe carefully, we find that the signs involved in formation of this Dosha are those signifying conflicting elements i.e., Fire and Water.
Because of this conflict, the native experience low returns for his efforts, turmoil and controversies.
Many scholars assign these Gadanta combinations with spiritual progress. As the conjunctions denote end of one zone and beginning of another, spiritually they signify transgression of the spirit to another level. The unfavourable circumstances and happenings create deep impressions upon the psyche of the person. The pains and turbulence are blessings in disguise. New Creation invariably calls for destruction and sacrifice of the existing.
Thus, it would be wise for the people who have such a formation in the horoscope to appreciate the nature of conjoining signs and learn lessons from it. Take it as an opportunity rather than considering it as a Dosha.
Any Pandit would be able to perform remedial pooja for Ganda Moola Dosha. This is to be performed when Moon passes through the same birth nakshtra just succeeding one's date of birth.

ज्योतिष विषयक चर्चा में गंड मूल दोष, मांगलिक दोष, पितृ दोष, नाडी दोष और कालसर्प दोष के बारे में अक्सर डरावनी मान्यताए सामने आती है| जब हम इन दोषों के सर्जन के आधार पर विचार करते है तो स्पष्ट होता है की इन में कोई एकाद ग्रह को ही आधार बनाया गया है और कुंडली के बाकी ग्रह-योगों को नजर अंदाज किया गया है | अगर ऐसे दोष योगों के बनने की संभावना को देखे तो पता चलता है की फ्रिक्वंसी काफी ज्यादा है | लगभग ४० प्रतिशत कुंडली में ऐसे दोष उपस्थित पाये जाते है| जब इतनी ज्यादा संभावना बनती हो तो तार्किक होना चाहिए की उससे गभराने की चरुरत नहीं हे | लेकिन ‘मारता क्या न करता?’ एस न्याय से लोग व्यावसायिक ज्योतिषियों की बातों में आ जाते है | ऐसे ज्योतिषियों की धारणा के अनुसार ऐसे दोष कुंडली धारक के जीवन में तरह तरह की अड़चनें पैदा करते है।
ऐसे ही एक दोष, ‘गंड मूल दोष’ के बारे में कहा जाता है की किसी व्यक्ति के जन्म के समय चन्द्रमा अगर रेवती, अश्विनी, आश्लेषा, मघा, ज्येष्ठा या मूल नक्षत्रों में हो तो गंड मूल दोष बनता है| अर्वाचीन ज्योतिषियों ने इस में सुधार कर के पुरे नक्षत्र को छोड़ कर सिर्फ नक्षत्र के उस पाद को जिसमे राशि और नक्षत्र दोनों की ही संधि होती हो उसे ही इस दोष का आधार माना है |
रेवती नक्षत्र के चौथे चरण में अथवा
अश्विनी नक्षत्र के पहले चरण में
अथवा
आश्लेषा नक्षत्र के चौथे चरण में
अथवा
मघा नक्षत्र के पहले चरण में
अथवा
ज्येष्ठा नक्षत्र के चौथे चरण में
अथवा
मूल नक्षत्र के पहले चरण में
राशि चक्र के इस हिस्से में जब चंद्र हो तो आखिर ऐसा क्या होता है की उसे दोष माना गया ? संधि का अर्थ है एक की समाप्ति और दूसरे की शुरुआत | यह स्थान में एक परिवर्तन की क्रिया होती है और परिवर्तन पीडाजनक होता है | गंड मूल दोष में जो नक्षत्र-राशि जिम्मेवार बनती है उनका तत्त्व अग्नि और जल है जो आपस में शत्रुता घोतक है| इसी तत्त्व के आधार पर माना गया की ऐसी संधि के समय जन्म लेने वाले इंसान को जीवन में विरोधी तत्वों की टक्कर का अनुभव हो सकता है ! इसी कारण ऐसा माना गया है की व्यक्ति के पुरुषार्थ और लाभ में विसंगतता हो सकती है |
कई अन्य स्थान पर, जैसे लग्न स्थान के बारे में ऐसा माना जाता है की लग्न जब दो राशि की संधि पर हो तो ऐसे व्यक्ति के शरीर व् स्वभाव में दोनों राशि के प्रभाव होंगे| लेकिन उसे दोष के रूपमे नहीं देखा गया| गन्ड मूल दोष को हमें दोष के रुपमे न समझ कर जो नक्षत्र और राशि उस में सम्मलित हो रही हो उसके अनुरूप व्यक्ति के स्वभाव में विरोधाभास को जान कर तदनुसार मन को प्रशिक्षित करने पर जोर देना चाहिए |
कई विद्वान इस योग को आध्यात्मिक उन्नति के लिए घोतक मानते है | आध्यात्म में संधि को पुराने की विदाय और नविन के आगमन के रूप में माना गया है | संधि के परिपाक के रूप में होने वाले मानसिक विरोधाभास, परिताप और विषाद को आध्यात्मिक अनुभव, ज्ञान व् नवनिर्माण का घोतक समझ कर उसकी महिमा कही गई है|
पारंपरिक भारतीय ज्योतिष में जैसे अन्य दोष के निवारण के उपाय है वैसे ही इस दोष के निवारण के लिए भी है| गंड मूल दोष के परिहार के लिए जन्म तिथि के आसपास के दिनों में जब जन्म नक्षत्र में चन्द्रमा हो तब विशेष पूजा का प्रावधान है। यह पूजा धार्मिक कर्म कांड करवाने वाला कोई भी पंडित से करवा सकते है |
